Tropics President Art "Pilin" Alvarez was awarded an ABA expansion franchise in August of 2006. He quickly put together a roster and hired Ed Auricchio as his head coach. Alvarez secured perhaps the finest arena in the league (Nova Southeastern University's brand new gym) as well as a dance team and everything that goes with a first-class basketball experience. The result was a fantastic 18-5 season and a No. 3 ranking in the 50-team league.
